Halloween round 2

Saturday,I started with yes...another 5k!! We had a pretty relaxing day, actually! Cleaning and laundry. Fun Fun. Ben took the kids swimming while I baked cupcakes. The kids came home and helped me decorated them. Then it was time to get ready for the branch trunk or treat.

Connor had wanted to be the giraffe this year ( I have really got my use out of that one!) but then later decided he would get too hot. Then he wanted to just wear his Superman pj's that his cousin TJ gave him, since it had a cape. But as we were looking for his Halloween bucket, we found a bin that had Ben's uniforms from Afghanistan. His eyes immediatley lit up and he said, " I WANT TO BE DADDY FOR HALLOWEEN!" So he wore his cover and jacket. He looked so cute!

After we had eaten dinner, the kids were doing the cake walk, when ben and I noticed that Ivan kept showing up with candy. He had found somebody's bowl of trick or treat candy and was stealing pieces out!!

They loaded up on candy, even the missionaries were handing it out, and it was time to go home. The kids, once again had a total blast. And Halloween...isn't even over yet!

Is Halloween over yet?!

The kids didn't have school on Friday but Ms. Harm had an all day Girl Scout event. They spent the day going on field trips but mostly worked on a Halloween carnival for their families. All day long I answered questions from the boys about where Harmony was. And about when it was finally time to put their costumes on!

One of the things that the girls did was have a safety pin, and everytime they did something that was responsible, they got a mark. Harmony had the most marks on hers! She was very excited to pick out her prize!

The boys had tons of fun and got a ton of candy and prizes. Ivan and Ethan both won in the costume contest! Ethan's costume we got for a $1 at the girl scout garage sale! How do you like that?! Ivan kept telling everybody that he was Woody.

Ben had to leave early, so we got home and I put the kids to bed. Then I stayed up and watched a scary movie until he came home. It was a fun day with the kids, but I was really tired because I had done a 5k that morning.Go me. Figure I have some mini candy bars to work off!

wfmw

I don't really carry a diaper bag around too much anymore. However, whenever I bring Ivan to drop in he has to have a bag. Plus when I take him to the grocery store, I am also usually hauling a big coupon holder and my planner. So it is more like a big tote bag. There is nothing like leaving the house with a perfectly organized bag...only to return with one in chaos.

For example, after our last trip to the commissary my bag was overflowing with, reciepts, Ivan's crocs that he tossed in the aisle, empty snack bags, gross wipes from wiping cheeto hands etc...

So what works for me? I have started bringing ziplocs with me. One for each category, of the bag. I have a bag with wipes, diapers, extra outfit. Another one with sunscreen& bug spray. One with snacks. One for reciepts ( also makes it easier when it comes time to send in a refund or return something). One for other papers. And a kit for me. With chapstick, deodarant, a brush etc. And then one last one for garbage.

It works for me since I don't carry the traditional diaper bag. It may seem like a lot of bags, but it makes life easier!

On my Christmas wish list is organizing bags from the lazy organizer site. That is what I would love to use!

For Susan..

My sister tagged me ( since I am so un-busy this week! LOL) It was funny because while I was reading hers, I thought wow, she has a lot of the same ones I do!! So I have to write 6 things about me ( deep dark secrets...or not) things that people probably don't know. Then leave a comment on other people's blogs for who I tag. Ready...set...go

1) I can't keep my house clean for longer than a day. It is true. One day I will work insanely hard, getting everything done. The next day, I am in the clear since all that work was done the day before,so I do very little...and then the next day, well it is a mess again. The kids don't make this easier on me either!

2)I keep a calender and a planner. And neither are complete. My planner, I take with me. So I can write things down when I am gone. My calender, I fill in with the kid's school calenders and when I make a phone call or recieve one. So neither are ever complete.Someday I will get it figured out!

3) My biggest goal in life is to become organized. If I were paid for all the times that I have "tried to get organized" well I would be able to pay someone to do it for me. The kid's dentist told me once that I am more organized then I realize. Seeing as how he had never entered my house I wondered how he would know that. He responded, " well your husband is deployed right? And you have 4 kids. But only one has an appt. today. So you are arranged babysitting for 3 kids, arrived 15 min. early, with all of your tri-care stuff in order." So maybe I am not as bad as I think...

4) I talk too much.No secret there. When it is time to leave somewhere, Ben says that I am "on my farewell tour". I can strike up a conversation with anyone. And I have. I will be talking to Ben about somebody and he will say who are you talking about? And it is usually something like, " oh my bagger at the commissary" or "this guy walking into the library"....

5)I like "old people" shows. Like Matlock and Murder She Wrote. Now I also love new ones but...it is just nice to watch something that is not rated TV 14 LSV. Or whatever. Nice to watch things that are just...more clean. No swearing, no sex, no graphic scenes...know what I mean?

6)I listened to High School Musical 2 in the car...and Harmony wasn't in there. I just love the music. Both of the soundtracks are fun to listen too.

Well hopefully that wasn't too boring for you all! OK lets see 6 people...I am choosing bloggers so here goes:

Cindy
Deborah
Jenn
Beth
Christy

(Mom I didn't pick you since Susan already took you!)

Tackle it Tuesday ( a little late)

For me,it is Wednesday. But whatever...here is my tackle!

I have a wonderful husband.I really do. Ever since I started scrapbooking ( hello 10 years ago!) I have always had a spot to "do my thing". Wether it be a corner in our bedroom, a rolling cart, a converted closet etc. He has always been willing to let me have a spot.

Right now, my desk is in a large hall closet. I fit everything in there and went on my merry way. But the one thing that I have always had a problem with is...I don't like being seperate from the kids. Or Ben when he is home. When I am "in the zone", and working hard on a project, there is kind of a free for all in the house.

Because of this,I really wanted to move my scrapbook room to the living room. We never use this desk. The computer monitor was broken in our move, and so we always just use the lap top. The majority of our bills are paid online, so I hardly ever spend any time sitting and writing checks. Looking in all the bins and baskets, there really wasn't anything that needed to be in the living room. So...I started the process of moving things around.

I started out clearing off the desk.I put everything on my kitchen table and then moved all of the scrap stuff over. I am not done, but my "muscle" is at work. So Ben is going to move the desk and computer away. Then I will move my stuff the rest of the way over.

I am hoping to get more done this way. Ecspecially with Christmas card season rapidly approaching!

Busy day

Harmony and I had a busy day yesterday! Girl scouts in the morning, and then we decided to go out to lunch as a date.

The girl scouts were going on a tour of a submarine the USS Houston. I had never been on a sub and was very interested. We stood topside and learned about the nuclear reactors. The Lt. was obviouslyThe girl not used to talking about things with young girls. He made a comment about, if one of the piece of equipment failed, " if we didn't die right away..." yeah. But all in all we had a good time. We got to go below and see the torpedos and the other computer and machinery rooms. The most interesting part for me, was seeing the galley. I talked to the CS ( is it culinary specialist Cindy?) who is the guy in charge of all the food on the ship. He told me that for each meal, he has to start 2 hours before the meal is served. He said he makes everything from scratch, and that there were no convenience foods at all. I thought it was really interesting how they prepare and plan for meals. And Cindy, when they said he was a CS I knew what it was!! Obviously not what it stood for but..." luv my cs" was in my mind!

We then went into the command room and looked through the periscope. The girls were a little dissapointed that all they could see was the parking lot!

We were only allowed to take pictures topside, but my camera battery died after 2 pictures. There was a reporter there and she is going to share pictures, along with Harmony's leader. So I will share those when I get them.

After that it was on to Planet Hollywood. It was nice to be with just my girl! She declared it her 2nd fav. restaraunt. Hard Rock Cafe is her 1st. She got so messy eating her spare ribs and is now embarrased that I am putting that picture on. Poor thing, she will get over it. The picture of us, I don't look good at all, but that doesn't matter. The ship behind us was used in Independence Day.

It was a long day as we did a little bit of shopping afterward. We had fun though!

Out of the Mouth of babes (part 439,896)

I swear my kids are sooo funny. They honestly say the funniest things. So I started writing down just a couple of things that they said...

Yesterday, Harmony and I went on a Mommy & daughter date to Planet Hollywood. They have spare ribs on the kids menu and so she decided that is what she wanted. Once she got them, she said to me, " why are they called spare ribs anyway? It is not like, if you lose a rib, they give you a spare!"

One day, Connor told me that he needed to tell me a secret. Ethan's eyes got wide and he said, " don't tell her my weakness Connor!" I was really surprised and asked him, " what is your weakness Ethan?" He replied, " my number one weakness is chocolate. I can only eat it once a day!" Now you might think that this is something that he learned from me, but that is not true. I mean why would I want to limit chocolate to once a day?!

OK this one is honestly more about Ben but...we were sitting at dinner and Harmony started talking about her day. She was telling us about this boy and girl in her class, when she said, " I know they like each other. It is soooo obvious." Ben just looked at her and said, " stop talking like a 14 year old!"

Life around this house is just a laugh a minute!

Just another manic...morning

I did not go to bed until after midnight last night. Ben left for PT early this morning. Ivan woke up at 6 am and got in bed with me. I fell back to sleep. " Marie, the kids are going wild downstairs".Ben is home. Dang it, what time is it? Not a good start. Kids get dressed. Connor is wearing shorts that are just a touch to small, Harmony is wearing a pair that are usually her pj's. " But I don't have any more". Oh yes you do. She changed without too much fuss. Then it was 20 min. until it was time to be outside. Lunches needed to be packed. Book orders filled out. Money for the school store to dole out. Breakfast to be made. Harmony's hair to be brushed, and Ivan's diaper is sagging, while he is screaming and crying because Ethan will not share Lego ships. At 10 minutes and counting, Harmony is re-writing her homework. Hair still undone. Finally, backpacks are packed with homework and lunches. Ivan is still crying over legos. Boys are out the door, and just a few seconds later Harmony is out too. And I don't have to see them again until 3. phew. I lock the door behind them as Ivan the escapee is heading for the door. He settles down, because he has finally stolen the lego ships, and I turn on my laptop. Doorbell. Crap. Thinking it is maybe one of the workers who are painting our housing. No it is Harmony. "What on earth are you doing here?!" " Mom the gate is locked!" Yeah. Those dreaded stairs, at the top,is a gate that they lock after hours. Apparently no one felt it was necessary to unlock it. Groups of kids are now heading back to their homes, or jumping over the fence. Throw my kids and the neighbor boy in the van ( who "forgot" to put his seatbelt on, and go and drop them off. As I am leaving the school, I can't find my ID card, which I have to have to get back into my house. Finally find it. Go through the gate and let the guard know that the other one needs to be unlocked. "Yeah a lot of people have told us that." he looks thrilled that I let him know this piece of info. Drive home. Ivan is crying because he wants "gum gum". I get him in the house. What a morning. At least things have settled now...but man what a way to start the day!

my stress reliever

Just one of them. But still...I have been scrapbooking lately!! My mother in law, sent me a package with a ton of scrapbook stuff. THANKS!! So I have been having fun. My gallery is updated at Creating Keepsakes. For lack of a better way of doing it, just go to... www.creatingkeepsakes.com search under scrapbook pages for "soaked". One of my layouts will come up, then click on " other layouts by Julie T" and you will be able to see the rest. Feel free to give me TONS of praise! :)

Micronesian Island Fair

Although, our lives here on Guam, are not THAT much different than in the states, there are some notable differences.I forget that there is a lot of culture on this island. We were here for the Guam Liberation Days but didn't attend. So when I heard about the Micronesian Island Fair... I knew I wanted to go.

Harmony, Ben and I, are all suffering from colds. Ivan had slept a grand total of 5 hours the night before, and it was hot. So we decided to just go for a little while.

As soon as we got there, you could hear drums. One of things I love to watch are all the dancers. The kids love the music too. So we watched them for a little bit and then walked around to the different booths. We bought some bracelets for Harmony's girl cousins ( we are going to try to get them in the mail this week). Harm complained about not getting one, but then said, " well I guess I can get this stuff anytime". And she is right about that!

We tried mango doughnuts, which the kids didn't like. We walked around a garden and looked in a chamarro hut. The men were dressed in native outfits...meaning basically a loin cloth. Harmony told Ben, "I am not going over there. They are not even covered!" Ethan loved the hut and the goats outside it. Plus the birds in the cage.

By this time, the kids were sweating and so we went and got some shaved ice. Bubble gum all around. The kids played in the park and then we headed home. It was fun to get out for awhile. I think I will be going to the next island fair!

Smart Habit Saturday

It is not actually Saturday. I admit it. It is Sunday. But honestly, it is not an easy task to get the computer away from Ben on Saturdays! Anyway, one of the blogs that I love to look at ( just looking at her flickr photos will make you drool is called the Lazy Organizer. I have always wanted to be organized and have never quite made it there. But I keep on trying. Anyway, she runs what is called Smart Habit Saturday. Where you pick a few things that you would like to work on during the week( or longer). So this week I am just going to pick 4 things. Things I am working on this week

** clean the kitchen as soon as we are done eating
**watch an hr. less of tv each day
** keep a log of what I am spending $$ on
**drinking 72. oz of water.

If you are interested in doing smart habit saturday, just check out her blog!

batting a thousand

Do you ever feel like, maybe being a mother, might not have been the best "career choice?" I would like to say now that my excuse is, "Ivan is sick and so I have been holding a crabby boy half the day, every day. I had spouse club stuff going on this week and now Harm is sick. And so am I." So now that you know all that, it will explain everything. Right?

And for some reason...it keeps happening to Connor. Although I did make Ethan mad when I took away his pokemon cards and wouldn't let him take them to school. But on to Connor...

Yesterday I had a very long day. And by my 3rd trip to the commissary ( yes you read that right)I was a little out of it. There was a woman standing in the frozen food section, that I thought looked familiar. But I just couldn't place her. Then Connor walks around the cart, and I hear her say " Oh hi Connor!" And then it hits me...like a smack in the face...it is his TEACHER! I am an idiot. And no the "McCool School" t-shirt did not help.

Then this morning, Harmony ended up staying home from school. I bought the kids Lunchables for today. So it was a nice relaxed morning. But something kept nagging at me. Something that I might have forgot. And then I realized, it was Connor's homework. He is my biggest complainer when it comes to homework. And this is kindergarten we are talking about here. Can't wait till high school! Anyway, Ben convinced him to do all his homework on Monday. And he did. He was so excited to turn it in, but he is supposed to wait until Friday. So I made him wait. Well when I realized that we forgot it, I thought oh I will be "Mommy to the rescue" and take it up to school. Except one thing...where is his homework? And I realized ( like another one of those smacks in the face) that I threw it away. yes. The homework that he had worked so hard on and was so proud of. I feel terrible.

I am not looking forward to seeing him after school. Oiy! Maybe it is high time I turn my mommy card in...

the force

Connor: "Mommy, when you kiss me, while I am playing video games, I can't even concentrate!"

Mom: " Gee Connor, I am soooo sorry."

Ethan:" You know Mom, he does have to learn the ways of the force."

Connor: "...and you know, you can't kiss on me forever."

Mom:BIG sigh, " yeah I know"

I can't believe I almost stood in the way of the force!

Tackle it Tuesday

My tackle for today is...my whole house! Yikes! It all started with Ben taking some leave. What is it about having your husband home, that makes it so nothing gets done?! My neighbor was telling me that her house is always a mess when her dh is home on leave. Anyway, with Ben being home on leave, and then Ivan getting sick...the first thing to go (besides my diet!!) was the house. As I was tripping over things today, I decided I just needed to buckle down and get work done. It is getting gross around here! One of the things I am getting done? 7 loads of laundry! ugh.

There was one thing that I got done, that I have been meaning to do since June! Ever since our shipment got here. Wash my microwave. It was a gross nasty mess. Now it is sparkling clean and smells like 409.

I didn't take pictures this week because there would be way too many photos!

MPM

Sometimes the fact that we are a day behind the rest of the US, has it's advantages! Like an extra day to get my posts done! :) This week, my menu plan is...kind of sad. It really is. Last week I spent so much time trying to match recipes with side dishes etc. This week...is a little different.I have a 2.5 year old with a high fever. Who is currently, sweating, but refuses to take his "wanket" off. When Ivan is sick, he wants one thing, to be held. Constantly. While I love snuggling with him (as it is a rare event), it makes it sooo hard for me to get things done. Including the fact, that I am exaughsted! So here is my meal plan...trying to use things out of the pantry. I am going grocery shopping on Sat. so I haven't figured those two out yet. Like I said, kind of a sad week! Not too much inspiration here!

Tuesday: Ben's gone
B: cereal
D: Ben is picking up pizza ( along with more fever reducer)

Wednesday:
B: applesauce and muffins
D:tuna helper,corn, rolls

Thursday:
B:cereal
D:chilimac, corn muffins, brocoli

Friday: ( planetarium trip for 3 big kids and me)
B:pancakes
D: eggs, bisquits

something new

OK, it may not be funny to everyone but...

For my whole life, the first weekend in October has always been devoted to one thing. General Conference. As a child, conference was BORING. Just a 2 hour art fest, as we were allowed to bring paper to color on. When I was at college, I started taking notes. Somewhere along the way it became important to me! :)

Starting when we left for college, my siblings and I, usually call my Mom on the weekends to update. My Mom told me that she could always tell who was watching conference by when they called her that weekend! But this year, it's a little different for us.

Conference for us starts at around 1am. So we will not be watching. We figure, even if we did stay up until then, we would probably fall asleep during the session. Or if we woke up, we would probably fall back to sleep!

None of the branches here have satelite, and it is not on tv. So they wait until the week after conference, get the dvd of the sessions, and then play it at one of the other branches.

When I thought of all the changes that we would make, being here on Guam, I didn't imagine conference would be one of them!

I have been reading about a "celebrity scrapbooker" ( Ben says they don't exist) who has just picked up her family and moved to China, to support her husbands dream. She has written so much about her new city, and I realize that I really haven't written much about Guam. So I am going to try to take some pictures and show you what it is like around here!

Works For Me Wednesday

This week, WFMW is a little different than last week.Instead of giving a tip, you ASK for one. So I have been dealing with something for awhile, and I am wondering what advice someone has. I should be a pro at this, after all Ivan is not the first 2 yr. old I have dealt with but...

Recently, Ivan hasn't been eating. Today's menu consists of:
Bfast: half of a choc. muffin
snack: honeycombs...which after a couple were dumped into a waterbottle
lunch: some sips of juice, and about 2 spoonfuls of mac&cheese, none of his mandarin oranges
snack after nap: 2 baked french fries

He hasn't eaten dinner yet, but I doubt he will eat very much of it. When I take him to day care for drop in, they said he eats really well, but I can't get him to eat anything. Mac and Cheese is a huge fav. but that doesn't seem to matter lately. It doesn't matter if it is a favorite food or something else...he won't eat. I am currently not trying to give him as much juice. Maybe he is filling up on that?

Any advice on getting a 2 year old to eat would be appreciated!

Tackle it Tuesday

Oh what a tackle it was! I got soooo much done today and I am soooo happy about it! Can't you tell by the number of o's? Anyway, on to the tackles! I wanted to do my upstairs hall closet. It wasn't terrible, but certainly annoying! I couldn't get a really clear picture because it is at the top of the stairs. So I didn't want to fall down the stairs in the attempt to get one!

My next tackle was my scrapbook desk. It has looked like that for over a month and so you can probably imagine how many pages I have done! I was really annoyed with myself, because as I kept going, I found so many cute things that I didn't even remember that I had!!! It really does pay to be organized.

And my last tackle, while it might not sound like anything big...it was. I made it to the post office. This is my least favorite of all errands when I have to drag kids along. It is in this barracks type area. It has this long hallway, and the kids run up and down and then try to push the door and leave. But I needed stamps. And so I put it on the list and tackled it today!

recipes

I have had some requests for a couple of recipes that I used on my meal plan. So here goes:

Caramel Apple Salad ( I ripped this out of a copy of LDS Living)
1 (8oz) container cool whip, thawed
1 can (8oz) crushed pineapple
1 pkg (4 oz.)instant butterscotch pudding mix
3 c. diced apples ( I prefer gala or pink lady)
1 c. chopped pecans
1 c. mini marshmallows

Mix cool whip, crushed pineapple ( with juice) and pudding. Add apples, pecans and marshmallows. Mix. Keep in fridge until ready to serve.

Devil's Food cookies ( from Light and Tasty Aug. 2006)

1 pkg. (18 1/4oz)devils food cake mix
2 eggs
2 tablespoons butter, softened
3 tablespoons water
1/2 c. mini semi-sweet choc. chips

In a large blowl, combine all ingredients. Fold in choc. chips. Spoon on to greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 10-13 minutes.

I had planned to serve these with vanilla ice cream but the freezer section at the commissary is broken. So it is just the cookies. Leftovers will go in to lunch bags!

Menu Plan Monday

Ok another week, means another round of blog posts.I really have been having a lot of fun with these!

One thing that I have always wanted to do, is be organized to have a meal plan. To go and get groceries for certain meals. Not plan to make something and then realize that I don't have that 1 ingredient! However, I do have a couple of things that are "just in case I don't feel like making what I have planned!"

So this is one that I really wanted to get into. So here goes:

Monday:
B: cereal
D:meatloaf, scalloped potatoes, rolls, brocoli ( Harm is @ Girl Scouts)

Tuesday:(Ben and Harmony are gone)
B: pancakes ( leftover from this weekend)
D:cresant dogs, mac & cheese, fruit

Wednesday:
B:muffins & fruit
D: baked pineapple chicken, rice

Thursday:
B:cold cereal
D: "hamburger helper" ( a noodle dish that is similar to hamburger helper)

Friday:
B:free choice
D:hamburgers, carmel apple salad, oven baked fries

Saturday:
B:cinnamon rolls & scrambled eggs ( Harm gone)
L:mac & cheese
D:leftovers

Sunday:( mornings are hard because of church!)
B:???
L:???
D:chicken & rice casserole, rolls,
dessert: devils food cookies ( We decided to try and only have 1 dessert a week!) These cookies are a low fat recipe and only 2 pts. each)
